The exterior of the Pier Pavilion is an iconic landmark on the South Wales coast. Through this exciting refurbishment the Pavilion will again be open to the public.
Of major importance in this project is a commitment to environmental good practice, based on sustainable principles. An Environment Centre offering updated information will be part of a wider community education programme to encourage school and family visits. Click here to download our Environmental Policy (PDF).
Creating a wide range of usage through environmental art, science and community activities are some of the ideas it is hoped will arouse local and national interest in this splendid building. A planning grant to achieve these aims has been made from the Heritage Lottery Fund to Penarth Arts & Crafts Ltd, a not for profit organisation with charitable status which has managed the Washington Gallery since 1998 and was a recipient of a Civic Trust For Wales Award for the re-use of the building in 2004.
Consulting with the local community and a variety of experts in conservation, heritage and design is part of the development of the project. While the restoration of the external structure of the Grade 2 listed building is crucial to the overall project, the challenge comes in the design and fit-out of the interior, allowing easy transformation to multi-use.
Regular events will include small theatrical productions, concerts, public meetings, community events, dances, events targeting younger audiences, art exhibitions and trade fairs. To accommodate such diverse events flexibility may be required for interchangeable flooring, retractable seating and IT equipment. The idea of an annual film festival has been raised and this, planned in early winter, would aim to become part of the European circuit.
PACL will be consulting widely with community groups, professional experts and members of the public as it plans this exciting development –
