18/06/2010: Testimonials from students:

“This project will help me incredibly to know the various roles the Pavilion has played in the community for when I speak to the Pavilion visitors – I want to ask if anyone remembers or visited the sun parlour!”

“Knowing about the history is important to understand the project.  Also as we interview people involved with the Marina Ballroom we can show knowledge and understanding.”

“The trip to St Fagans was really interesting.  We experienced what a house would’ve looked like in the 1940’s – it was very basic as the war had started and therefore the windows were blacked out and rationing was an evident strain on the family’s food supplies. We learned that there was not much on the family’s plates, vegetables were home-grown which they had to tend to themselves on any spare land they had.  It was a real eye opener!”

05/03/2010: The Marina Ballroom Project

The Marina Ballroom project aims to uncover the history of Penarth Pier Pavilion during its heyday. Workshops will be held in textiles, fashion, hair, music and dance styles, demonstrating old skills, and young volunteers involved with the project will be meeting older community members to talk about social occasions at the Pavilion.

The Marina Ballroom project will culminate in an exhibition of fashion styles at the Washington Gallery with a video diary of the project and a final retro dance being held at the Paget Rooms in late 2010.

12/05/10 YOUNG volunteers continue to discover more about the Pavilion thanks to the Marina Ballroom project.

The scheme, launched in November 2009, aims to uncover the history of the 80 year old seafront building during its heyday in the 1940s. Experts in textiles, fashion, hair, music and dance styles have held a number of workshops demonstrating old skills – with around twenty young volunteers meeting older community members to talk to them about what it was like to attend social occasions at the Pavilion. The group recently used older printing methods to produce tickets and posters for the Marina Ballroom dance, taking place in December.

tnAlex Johnson, a first year student at UWIC who is studying Graphic Communication, inked up a chase and used original wooden type to experience letterpress and linocut printing.
