A springtime update
The first three months of 2018 have brought some exciting developments at the Pavilion as well as some real challenges due to the adverse weather conditions. In January we launched the first exhibition of the New Year. “In the Mind’s Eye”, an exhibition of photography by Suzie Larke was designed to promote a greater understanding of those with depression or anxiety and help change attitudes towards mental health. The responses from visitors to the exhibition, and comments left in the Visitors’ Book were overwhelmingly positive. Last Friday, we launched the next exhibition which lasts until 22nd April and displays a variety of works of art by members of the Vale of Glamorgan Artists, a collective formed in 1997.
Early in February we were delighted to welcome Waterloo Tea as our partners in the management and operation of the Pavilion Café. Waterloo Tea have already established four Tea Gardens, with three in various parts of Cardiff and one in the former Washington Cinema here in Penarth, the previous base for Penarth Arts and Crafts. As well as operating the Café on our behalf, they will be increasingly involved in the catering for various events held in the Pavilion.
A rather different form of partnership with Snowcat Cinema has enabled the long-awaited re-opening of the cinema last October. Run by Penarth resident, Ben Rive, Snowcat is an entirely independent operation and we are really pleased with the increasing popularity of this initiative. We hope very much to see more and more people taking advantage of the regular screenings organised by Snowcat over the coming months.
And now for something completely different. At the end of March, Red Herring Theatre Company, again run by a Penarth resident, Alex Wilson, put on three performances of Jeeves and Wooster, a comedy which won the prize for the best new comedy at the Olivier Theatre Awards in 2014. With all three performances sold out, we are looking forward to welcoming the company back nearer to Christmas.
We soon hope to launch a new, improved web site which will contain full details of all events taking place in the Pavilion throughout the rest of 2018.
