January Update

Jan 12, 2018

The last month of 2017 saw a varied programme of events and activities at the Pavilion. It began with the ever-popular Tea Dance, run by Alan Taylor. In 2018 we will be holding such an event on a quarterly basis. Snowcat Cinema put on nine screenings of popular Christmas films, with sell-out screenings of the ‘Muppets Christmas Carol’ and ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ on the last Saturday before Christmas. Details of screenings for 2018 are now available (see the What’s On page on our website).

Each week-end throughout December a workshop for children covered a range of craft activities including lamp making, paper Christmas trees and paper snowflakes. Our catering staff held a number of very successful Christmas Afternoon Teas and will be offering similar special events during 2018. The final week leading up to Christmas included two excellent choral events. On Sunday 17th Spectrum Singers paid their third annual visit to the Pavilion and this was followed on Thursday 21st with a sell-out concert by Caritas, a local group of highly professional singers. Caritas was formed in January 2013 with the combined purpose of singing small-scale choral works to a high standard and raising at least £1,000 for a charity or other good cause at each concert. The concert in the Pavilion
raised over £1500 half of which was donated to PACL with the other half going to the Samaritans.

We are now looking forward to a busy 2018. The twice-weekly Tai Chi sessions, held on Wednesday and Sunday mornings have already begun. Congratulations are due to the leader of these sessions, Bob Ray, who has recently qualified as an ‘Instructor Trainer’ for ‘Tai Chi for Better Health’. Our partnership with Rubicon Dance will see an extension of their activities in the Pavilion in the near future. In the meantime, the regular Tuesday Morning sessions recommenced on 9th January, and on the same day the very popular Painting Classes run by local artist, Pauline Williams, also began a new term.

Our first exhibition for 2018 will open on Friday 19th January for 6 weeks. Entitled “In The Mind’s Eye” this project by Suzie Larke is an attempt to portray depression and anxiety through conceptual photography (see the Exhibition page of our website for full details). Looking further ahead we are delighted to have reached an agreement with Red Herring Theatre for three evening performances of “Jeeves & Wooster; In Perfect Nonsense”, the winner of the Best New Comedy at the Olivier Awards 2014. Full details will be posted on our web site in due course. We are delighted with the number of requests for venue hire, including weddings, that we are receiving. These events are an essential source of income to maintain the Pavilion as a unique facility for the people of Penarth and beyond. We are also planning an exciting programme of events for children and families during each school holiday.
