The Next Few Months

Posted:
May 12, 2018

As reported in our ‘Springtime update’ the first three months of 2018 were extremely busy. We are pleased to report that this pattern has continued throughout April with a number of weekly events as reported below, together with a number of special events, including a very successful exhibition by the Vale of Glamorgan Artists. We have an equally busy programme of activities for May, June, July and beyond.

Exhibitions

In our previous update we reported that the exhibition by the Vale of Glamorgan Artists Group was schedule to run from 6th to 22nd of April. We received such positive comments from visitors regarding the exhibition that we were delighted to extend it to 29th April. Our thanks to all the artists who provided such a varied and exciting collection!

Our next scheduled exhibition will be part of a series of events from 9th to 16th June organised by the ‘Forget-me -not’ group. We will be delighted to welcome them back to the Pavilion. The week beginning 18th June we will be hosting a short exhibition by Masters Degree students from Cardiff Metropolitan University. Throughout August we will be holding the 4th annual Pavilion Open Art Exhibition. This will be followed in September by a sole exhibition of work by the winner of last year’s POAE, Gigi Jones. Gigi is currently working on a range of new paintings and this will undoubtedly be an exhibition not to be missed!

Musical events

Between the 12th and 16th May the Pavilion will be the venue for a number of concerts as part of the Vale of Glamorgan Music Festival. Full details can be obtained from their web site: valeofglamorganfestival.org.uk
The event organised by the Forget-Me-Not Chorus will include no fewer than six free concerts and full details will be posted on our ‘What’s On’ page in due course.

On Sunday 1st July we will be welcoming world-renowned concert pianist, Simon Shewring, to the Pavilion for a lunchtime piano recital. Once again, full details will be available shortly. Later that month will bring the annual Penarth Chamber Music Festival to the Pavilion once again. Many of you will have attended the launch of this year’s festival on 18th February when the joint Musical Directors, David Adams and Alice Neary, announced that, in a departure from previous festivals, this year’s will be organised entirely by them though the venue will once again be the Pavilion. As soon as final details are announced we will publish them on the web site.

Regular events

We are pleased to confirm that the weekly dance sessions on Tuesday mornings run by Rubicon Dance are continuing and growing further in popularity. In response to requests from parents and other carers we have agreed to an additional session to be run on a trial basis on Monday 18th and 25th June and Monday 2nd and 9th July. These will be for 4-6 year olds and will take place from 4.15pm to 5.00pm. The long-running Tai Chi sessions take place each Wednesday and Sunday mornings from 10.30 to 11.30. At present, the Wednesday morning sessions are fully subscribed but places are still available on Sundays.

The Café/Waterloo Tea

The partnership between PACL and Waterloo Tea announced in our previous posting has certainly been a great success with customers enjoying the high standards of customer service and food quality that have become a hallmark of the other four Waterloo Tea Houses.

Snowcat Cinema at the Pavilion

Once again we are pleased to report that, with the increase in screenings put on by Snowcat, this initiative on the part of Ben Rive is proving to be increasingly popular, with sell-out attendances on a number of occasions. Screenings for May included the only showing on a big screen in Wales of the outstanding film, Gholam.

Venue Hire

We are also receiving an increasing number of requests for the hire of spaces within the Pavilion, including the cinema space, for a variety of purposes. As we have explained on a number of occasions, the Pavilion, managed by a charity, Penarth Arts and Crafts Limited (originally established in 1998) does not receive any revenue support from external bodies and is therefore totally dependent on income received from a variety of activities including weddings, family celebrations, and meetings. We have been most grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for the financial support given by them with the prime objective e of becoming commercially sustainable and we are continuing to work on our development strategy. As part of this strategy we commissioned an independent survey of users and this is informing future developments. In this connection you may have seen the invitation from the Board of Trustees for applications for a new post of Pier Pavilion Manager. The person appointed will play a crucial role in the delivery of the strategy and will no doubt be adding to the impressive list of activities already taking place in the iconic building.
