An evening with Stifyn Parri - hosted by Griffin Books

An evening with Stifyn Parri - hosted by Griffin Books

At this Halloween-night event, the entrepreneur, stand-up comedian and all-round entertainer Stifyn Parri will share stories from his newly published autobiography, 'Out with It! / Allan â Fo!'

'Out with It! / Allan â Fo!' is the first ever bilingual English/Welsh back-to-back autobiography of its kind: a riotous tour de force. This unique book contains some of the most outrageous, naughty and colourful stories from Stifyn's life and career; from backstage dramas at Les Misérables, to behind the scenes on Brookside, superstars’ tantrums and royal embarrassments, this is the inside story told by one of the biggest mouths in the country who’s worked with some of the biggest stars in showbiz.

In the book Stifyn tells of encounters with people such as Catherine Zeta Jones, Prince Charles, Grace Jones, Siân Phillips, Shirley Bassey and Bonnie Tyler as well as those who have had a lasting influence on him, especially his mam, Marilyn. From singing in chapel as a child and organising school shows to starring in the West End and establishing his production company MR PRODUCER which has produced some of Wales’s most significant events, 'Out with It!' uncovers every aspect of Stifyn’s life; from camp to humorous, and serious back to camp these pages share all the excitement of his life.

Stifyn’s life and career have always been interwoven bilingually, and this is perfectly reflected in his book; which is two books in one, in English and Welsh. But they aren’t mere translations of each other, but two different books with different focusses.

Stifyn’s CV is almost as long as his tongue – comedian, presenter, actor, singer, entrepreneur and producer. As well as performing in shows and pantos across Britain, including Les Misérables on the West End, he has presented and acted on television, making headlines early on in his career on soap opera Brookside with the first ever gay kiss to be broadcast in Britain. Since then Stifyn has been a champion of LGBTQ+ rights, having been active in campaigning against Clause 28 in the 1980s. At the moment he’s touring his stand-up show throughout Wales and presents a weekly show on Radio Cardiff.

This is an honest, humorous, outspoken book, which shows the man behind the public face. This is Stifyn Parri.

Stifyn will be answering audience questions and signing copies of the book. Tickets are £10 each, including a drink on arrival and a discount on book purchases.

Keeping Faith with Matthew Hall hosted by Griffin Books

Matthew Hall is a BAFTA award-winning screenwriter and twice CWA Gold Dagger nominated novelist. Join Matthew as he discusses his work writing both TV scripts and novels, including the TV phenomenon 'Keeping Faith'.

Matthew Hall comes from a colourful family of musicians and writers but in a bid to be the opposite of bohemian and creative he studied law at Worcester College, Oxford. He practised for several years as a barrister before realising that the daily feelings of impending doom might be due to his choice of career.

In spare moments between cases he studied and practised the craft of screenwriting and finally got his break aged 27 writing episodes of the hit ITV show, 'Kavanagh QC', starring John Thaw. Soon after, he was commissioned to create an original series for the new Channel Five, 'Wing And A Prayer'. The first season earned him a BAFTA nomination in the best series category. In a screenwriting career lasting over 20 years, Matthew has written over 50 hours of prime time TV drama.

His debut novel, 'The Coroner', was published by Pan Macmillan in the UK in 2009 and was nominated for the Crime Writer’s Association Gold Dagger in the best novel category. His eighth novel, a stand-alone thriller, 'The Black Art of Killing', was published by Penguin earlier this year.

Matthew is a boxing aficionado and the proud loser of one amateur fight. His ambition is to fight again and win or die trying.

KEEPING FAITH

After its first showing (as 'Un Bore Mercher') on S4C and in English as Keeping Faith on BBC Wales, the first series became the most watched non network show on BBC iPlayer.

Downloaded 17 million times on BBC iPlayer, the first series was the second most popular show of 2018. 'Keeping Faith' scored the highest drama ratings for BBC Wales in over 20 years and became a social media phenomenon. Following its success the show was acquired by BBC One and had its network premier in July 2018.

'Keeping Faith' received six nominations for the BAFTA Cymru awards 2018 and three wins in the best writer, best composer and best actress categories.

Howl at the Pavilion

Howl at the Pavilion

One final night of pro comedy before a summer break. Make sure you don't miss this one! Otherwise you'll have to wait til late September for a unique night of laughter for just £10.

IGNACIO LOPEZ

Spain's best export, Ignacio Lopez (more than 10 million online views) slams Spanish and British culture in a relentlessly funny show about invasions, history and tapas. An armada of sarcasm, silliness and songs! If you saw Ignacio's brilliant opening set in our first Penarth Howl in March, he'll be doing completely different (hilarious) material for us before heading to the Edinburgh Fringe for August!

"Unique and hilarious" - Buzz Magazine
"Had the crowd roaring" - Get Reading
"Charismatic with waspish charm, coaxing and smart!" Chortle
"Had the best line of the night" - Guardian
"Filled the room with laughter. Relevant and perceptive. An act not to be missed" - BroadwayBaby

MARTIN PILGRIM

Martin's laidback storytelling and killer punchlines have won him support slots with Stewart Lee, Russell Howard and Josh Widdicombe. He has been performing stand up since 2009, although thankfully very little evidence exists of his pre-2012 efforts. In his comedy, he shies away from obvious jokes and easy laughs, and instead prefers to dissect his subject matter in clinical detail, taking situations to their logical conclusion and often far beyond. He's taking his third full show to the Edinburgh Fringe this year in which he tries really hard to be less miserable.

"Adept and funny"- The Guardian
"A delight" - Alternative Comedy Cabaret.
"Fantastic storytelling" - Bristol Punchline

LOUISE LEIGH

"One of the most original and promising new acts to come out of the South West Comedy scene in the last two years” (Will Hodgson), Louise Leigh is a bona fide numpty dressed as a middle aged woman from Bristol. She's brutally honest about parenting, the midlife "sniping and logistics" phase of marriage and shaving your legs like you're in an advert.

"Great performance, great confidence, great jokes" -Gary Delaney
"Charming, funny and a natural rapport with the audience" -John Hegley

LORNA PRICHARD (MC)

BBC Sesh star Lorna was a TV news presenter before turning to stand up. Since swapping headlines for punchlines, she has performed at Edinburgh and Leicester Comedy Festivals, won a comedy award in San Francisco and hosted many events - from comedy nights, festivals and car rallies to a cat carnival!

"A warm and natural MC who puts the audience at ease." – Nick Page

"A really good comedian." – Lloyd Langford

Age Restrictions: 18+

An audience with Victoria Hislop

Join us for an audience with bestselling author, Victoria Hislop, who will be sharing her new book with us.

'Those Who Are Loved' is a powerful new novel which sheds light on the complexity and trauma of Greece’s past and weaves it into the epic tale of an ordinary woman compelled to live an extraordinary life.

Athens 1941. After decades of political uncertainty, Greece is polarised between Right- and Left-wing views when the Germans invade. Fifteen-year-old Themis comes from a family divided by these political differences. The Nazi occupation deepens the fault-lines between those she loves just as it reduces Greece to destitution. She watches friends die in the ensuing famine and is moved to commit acts of resistance. In the civil war that follows the end of the occupation, Themis joins the Communist army, where she experiences the extremes of love and hatred and the paradoxes presented by a war in which Greek fights Greek.

Eventually imprisoned on the infamous islands of exile, Makronisos and then Trikeri, Themis encounters another prisoner whose life will entwine with her own in ways neither can foresee. And finds she must weigh her principles against her desire to escape and live. As she looks back on her life, Themis realises how tightly the personal and political can become entangled. While some wounds heal, others deepen.

This event is part of Penarth Literature Festival.
