Unseen - Making the battle visible - Exhibition of new work about mental health
6th September - 22nd September
Cardiff conceptual photographer, Suzie Larke, exhibits work in progress from her latest project ‘Unseen’ at Penarth Pier Pavilion. ‘Unseen’ uses conceptual photography to illustrate the experience of struggle with mental health. It’s a means of translating experiences into imagery – finding a visual language to communicate what's difficult to verbalise. The interpretive images lay bare struggles often out of view for most, but very real for the beholder.
The exhibition showcases insights into a world as seen by a group of co-creators, visualising the struggles they may face on a day-to-day basis. As such, we observe an emotion, an experience – rather than simply capturing a moment in time.
Her subjects are as varied as the images and include Eurovision star SuRie, stand-up comedian Abi Roberts, and actress Rebecca Humphries.
The preview exhibition runs from 6th to 22nd September and invites visitors to share their feedback on the work via a questionnaire.
There is a public preview of the exhibition on Friday 6th September from 7pm and Suzie will be giving a talk about the project at 8pm, sharing her process and the experience of working with her subjects, with BSL interpreter. Suzie and guests will then host a panel discussion about photography and wellbeing. Everyone is welcome!
The project is commissioned and supported by Unlimited, celebrating the work of disabled artists, with funding from Arts Council Wales.
